A Rich Heritage

The Legend, Al Goldner.

Al Goldner (1918-2003), a native Detroiter, was educated in Dearborn, graduated from Michigan State University with a degree in floriculture and attended Ohio State University for graduate work. After WWII he returned to the Detroit area to manage Regner’s Nursery in Dearborn in 1947. Goldner was then hired by the J.L. Hudson Company in downtown Detroit as the garden buyer. During his five-year employment, Al was undoubtedly instrumental in the development of Hudson’s Garden Center at the “new” Northland Shopping Center.

Goldner-Walsh, Inc. (named after Al Goldner and his wife, Jean Walsh) opened its doors at Telegraph and 12 mile in 1953 on a 7/8ths acre plot of land (today the home of Wendy’s restaurant). Al Goldner, a gentleman farmer, was a pioneer and innovator of Michigan’s landscape industry. He introduced the concept of combining classical design, with the ethos of modernism accentuated by rare plant material, which resulted in timeless gardens and a legacy that lives on. Unquestionably, Al Goldner’s creativity, paired with his exceptional horticultural expertise, laid the foundation for the design philosophy that Goldner Walsh Garden & Home is nationally recognized for today.

Goldner Walsh Today

Goldner Walsh Garden & Home, located in the historic district of Pontiac, is multifaceted as a business. We boast a landscape design-build company, a full-service floral department, multiple event venues, garden center, tropical greenhouse, and 6-acre nursery. We are nationally known for high quality and unique plant material, award-winning landscape services, experienced staff, exquisite garden accents, and floral design. We actively support the local community and the arts. Here at Goldner Walsh we host many events from book signings, cultural events, dinners, art openings, and weddings.

In 1988, Tim Travis, former Operations Manager, and Jim Slezinski, Senior Landscape Designer and Horticulturist, purchased Goldner Walsh from Al Goldner to continue the legacy.
